What you'll be stepping into
Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is a public limited company wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda. The company is responsible for operating the high-voltage electricity transmission grid, bulk power supply, electricity imports and exports, system operations, and public infrastructure provision, including the ownership and operation of optical fibre infrastructure.

UETCL invites applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates for the position of Design Engineer.
Purpose
The Design Engineer will be responsible for developing, preparing, reviewing, and updating engineering drawings and designs to support the implementation of UETCL's Grid Investment Plan. The role involves planning and designing transmission lines and substations, preparing technical specifications and cost estimates, and ensuring compliance with relevant engineering standards and procurement guidelines.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will perform the following duties:
Transmission Network Planning: Participate in developing short-, medium-, and long-term plans for the expansion and improvement of the electricity transmission network.
Electrical Design and Documentation: Prepare electrical designs, bills of quantities, cost-benefit analyses, tender documents, and technical specifications for new transmission lines in accordance with applicable engineering standards and procurement guidelines.
Design Review and Upgrades: Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical specifications, and drawings for transmission lines and substations in collaboration with relevant user departments, particularly for grid upgrades, modifications, and renovations.
Site and Route Selection: Support the identification and assessment of suitable substation sites and transmission line routes to facilitate efficient and reliable infrastructure development.
Technical Advisory Support: Provide technical guidance and support on matters requiring notifications or assessments relating to the transmission grid.
Inspection and Quality Assurance: Inspect completed works and identify discrepancies between as-built drawings and actual installations carried out by contractors.
Design Compliance: Support the correction of design and installation discrepancies to ensure that completed transmission infrastructure meets approved engineering requirements.
Technical Coordination: Collaborate with relevant departments and project stakeholders to support the effective implementation of transmission network development projects.
Qualifications and Academic Requirements
Applicants must possess:
A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering from a recognised institution.
Required Work Experience
Candidates must have:
At least four (4) years of work experience in power systems planning and design, particularly involving transmission lines and substations.
Practical knowledge of engineering design, technical drawings, specifications, and transmission infrastructure development.
Additional Technical Skills and Certifications
The following skills and qualifications will be an added advantage:
Autodesk professional certification.
Knowledge of PLS-CADD, a software application used in transmission line design.
Knowledge of PLS-TOWER, used in the analysis and design of transmission line towers.
Experience preparing engineering drawings, bills of quantities, cost estimates, and tender specifications.
