Assistant Accountant – Full-Time

Uganda Christian University (UCU) is seeking a qualified and experienced Assistant Accountant to support financial operations at its Arua Campus. The successful candidate will assist with payment processing, bank reconciliations, payroll verification, budget management, financial reporting, statutory deductions, and the maintenance of accurate accounting records.
Applicants should have relevant academic and professional accounting qualifications, experience in a reputable organisation, proficiency in accounting software, and the ability to work under pressure. Candidates must also be committed and mature Christians.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or Business Science, majoring in Accounting and Finance, from a recognised institution of higher learning.
A professional qualification in Accounting and Finance from an internationally recognised institution is required. Examples include Part II CPA, ACCA, CIA, or FIA.
At least two (2) years of experience performing similar duties in a large and reputable public or private sector organisation.
Proficiency in relevant accounting packages.
Ability to work effectively under pressure.
Must be a committed and mature Christian.
Key Responsibilities
1. Payment Processing and Financial Records
Enter and process all payment vouchers.
Ensure that supporting documents, vouchers, cheque counterfoils, receipt copies, and other relevant records are submitted for filing.
Ensure the proper receipt and recording of all donated funds.
Prepare adjustments and report any financial anomalies to the Director of Finance.
2. Banking and Reconciliation
Receive and file hard copies of bank statements and other bank communications for all University bank accounts.
Provide banking-related information as requested by the Director of Finance, Financial Accountant, and Management Accountant.
Carry out bank reconciliations using bank statements and cashbooks.
Reconcile cash balances and petty cash floats.
3. Payroll and Statutory Deductions
Check and verify the accuracy of payroll records for full-time and part-time staff.
Ensure that statutory deductions are accurately calculated and payments are made on time.
Identify and report payroll discrepancies where necessary.
4. Financial Reporting and Budget Management
Review monthly trial balances.
Prepare adjustments and reports on financial irregularities for the Director of Finance.
Manage the budget, including preparing projections and monitoring expenditure.
5. Student Financial Support
Respond to student enquiries regarding their fee status.
Provide relevant financial information and support in accordance with University procedures.
6. Document Management and Other Duties
Maintain accurate and organised financial documentation.
Ensure the safe filing and accessibility of accounting records.
Perform any other official duties assigned by the Bursar from time to time.
