What you'll be stepping into

The Trade Finance Officer will support the Manager, Trade Finance in implementing the unit’s strategic objectives to grow trade finance income and business volumes. The role focuses on promoting existing and new trade finance products, developing customized solutions, acquiring new clients, and strengthening relationships with existing customers across Corporate and Retail Banking.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Financial Performance and Business Growth (30%)

  • Drive trade finance income and business volume growth in line with established performance targets.

  • Develop, improve, and roll out customized trade finance products for existing customers.

  • Support departmental budgeting and establish processes to monitor performance against budget.

  • Maintain existing client relationships and acquire new business.

  • Ensure compliance with statutory, legal, and bank requirements governing trade finance operations.

  • Collaborate with internal business units to plan and support future business requirements.

  • Support Relationship Managers in marketing customized trade finance products.

  • Conduct market research on trade finance products and pricing to maintain competitiveness.

  • Prepare and deliver product presentations to customers.

  • Expand the trade finance portfolio by onboarding key clients with identified business potential.

2. Internal Business Processes (40%)

  • Enhance and promote traditional and innovative trade finance products to existing and prospective customers.

  • Understand customers’ businesses and identify their needs through consultative selling and cross-selling.

  • Develop tailored product proposals that match customer needs and support revenue growth and profitability.

  • Participate in solution implementation and follow-up to minimize inconvenience to customers.

  • Provide trade finance guidance to Relationship Managers, operations teams, credit risk teams, and branch staff.

  • Coordinate utilization reports for Structured Trade Finance facilities and other trade products with back-office and credit risk teams.

  • Coordinate departmental audit activities when required.

  • Escalate and resolve operational issues within areas of responsibility.

3. Customer Service (20%)

  • Assist customers in resolving issues within the officer’s area of responsibility.

  • Initiate corrective actions to address problems affecting agreed service levels.

  • Ensure compliance with departmental Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

4. Learning and Growth (10%)

  • Conduct trade finance product training for bank staff across the institution.

  • Set individual and team performance objectives, standards, and targets annually.

  • Regularly review performance against agreed objectives.

  • Identify training and professional development needs and establish plans to address them.

Qualifications and Experience

Academic Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university.

Professional Qualifications

  • A professional banking qualification, such as ACIB, is an added advantage.

Work Experience

Applicants should have:

  • At least three years of banking experience.

  • Experience in customer service and trade finance products.

  • Knowledge of general branch banking operations.

  • Experience in relationship management and service delivery.
